With over 35 years of business experience, of the innumerable lessons I've learned there is one lesson that rings out: "If you don't learn from past short comings, you're bound to repeat them."
This is certainly not an original statement - but one that I'm sure has been real to many of us at one time or another. To improve our current condition, we look back, sideways and forwards in order to avoid potentially committing the same (or worse) pitfalls as before. But most importantly, we also need to have a good look inwards. Learning is both evolutionary and revolutionary: 1) Evolutionary, in that improvements are gradual, sometimes unaware that change or improvements are taking place. One only has to look back (measurements) to see how far they've come. 2) Other experiences were revolutionary - a.k.a, painful. Even with the most painstaking due diligence before making a decision, cross referencing with mentors and friends, there were hidden surprises that have significant impact on everyone. Two choices face us in those moments - grow up (learn) or give up (quit). There is no in between. Choosing to grow requires adeptness; a skill, or ability that's learned through the process of discipline and knowledge to transform our experiences - successful and unsuccessful - into learning that makes us better as individuals and teams over time. It's about being ADEPT. |
